A new feature introduced to the Android ecosystem is Voice Actions. Built in his “20 percent time” (a company policy at Google for giving employees a day of the week for private projects), Dave Burke built this tool to help make voice control more prominent.
Eric Schmidt said today that Google believes that some 200,000 new Android devices are being sold each day, leading to significant revenue in the form of increased mobile search traffic.
“People are finally beginning to figure out how successful Android is,” Schmidt said, pointing to recent studies showing the growth of the mobile operating system outpacing even the popular iPhone.
Recently I have been thinking of getting a new PMP because my Android phone isn’t quite enough nowadays. As some of you know, Android isn’t know for its aesthetic music player. I am a little tired of the iPod Touch so i got into to looking at the Zune HD. Upon my searching I found it to be a very good device. However, thats not what sold me. I started looking into their desktop software and i was blown completely away. Zune is a complete dream when it comes to UI, pricing options, music management, xbox live synchronization, and social networking built into the media player (centered around xbox live)!
Step aside Blackberries and iPhones, the American consumer has voted with his wallet and picked Android as his favorite flavor in this latest quarter. NPD has just confirmed their findings for Q2 2010, concluding that 33 percent of phones sold during the period had Android on board. This marks the first time is years (Q4 2007) that RIM hasnt held the crown in smartphone OS sales on US soil. Blackberry held 28% of the sales and iPhone occupied 3rd spot with 22%. Android’s success is largely thanks to several factors including, open source, free to use on all carriers, critical acclaim by tech community, and the sheer volume of phones running it.

As many of you know Google gives a lot of stuff away for free, in fact, i can think of anything that Google doesn’t give away for free. Surely this must be bad for their stock? Wrong, Google makes millions off their ads which you see everyday, those little search results you see at the edge of each search on google you make, the ads you see at the bottom of your smartphone regardless of its type, the flash box on the side of youtube for the newest movie.
Google Fiber is a project to build an experimental broadband internet netowrk in the United States in a community of Google’s choice by a selection process. These communities that happened to get into the project will be announced at the end of 2010. Over 1,100 communities responded to the selection process. (more…)
The latest report from Canalysis reports that Android is up 886% from last year’s sales during this quarter (keep in mind the Droid was released in November), and those wild sales put Android at 34 percent of the US market, compared to RIM’s 32 percent and Apples 21.7% share (that includes the iPhone 4 launch).
What does this say?
After years of losing market share to competing browsers Microsoft’s IE browser has posted it’s second consecutive month of browser growth.
For July, Internet Explorer snagged 60.74 percent market share, according to Netmarketshare. That’s up from 60.32 percent share in June and up nearly a full percentage point since May, when the company saw its market share dip below 60 percent.
This begs the question, why does IE suddenly increase in usage recently? Obviously one cant ignore the enormous growth of Windows 7. An operating system that sold more copies than its competition (Snow Leopard) in 7 weeks. Also, Windows has been heavily promoting their browser with their new TV campaign.
Safari has hit a new record for reaching a 5% market share for the first time.
Both Firefox and Chrome lost a bit of market share in July, making this the first time in recent memory where Google’s browser didn’t gain Market share value. Google dropped slightly from 7.24% to 7.14% (June to July)
I strongly recommend Google Chrome to anyone wondering.
No one’s under any impression that Apple’s OS is on the way too beating out Windows in the market share department. These last couple months can only reinforce that thought, the market share for OSX fell for the 5th straight month landing at 5% (not that Apple is hurting for cash). (more…)
